Hopefully, you have your WooCommerce plugin ready. If you have trouble setting it up properly, we have an easy guide that you can follow.
WooCommerce is easy to work with, as you will see. But unless you know what is required in each section, you could easily mess things up. In this tutorial, we will focus on helping you get the most out of this e-commerce plugin and make your inventory management easier.
We will show you how to add all types of products – physical, virtual, and referral products, and guide you through the steps of adding the product data.
Let’s get started.
How to Upload Products in WooCommerce
After setting up the WooCommerce plugin, you need to learn how to upload products to WooCommerce.
First, you need to log in to your WordPress dashboard. On your WordPress dashboard go to Products > Add New.
After that, you’ll see several options to add products. If you are familiar with WordPress, you’ll see that adding a product is almost the same as creating a new post or page.
WooCommerce uses the classic editor to add products.

1. Upload a Product
In this section, we will describe all of the items, one by one, that are related to uploading a product.
Product Title/Name
At the top of the page, you can give your product a title or name.
Product Description
Below the title, you’ll find a box to add a product description. It is the same way we write our post texts on WordPress.
Product Data
In the next box, you’ll find options that allow you to add product information. It is also known as an inventory management system. We will discuss this section in detail later in our article.
Product Short Description
In the third box, you have to add the product short description. This description will be used on the single product page.
Now, look at the right side. You’ll find here a few more options that are related to adding a product.
Product Categories
Categories are used to separate products into different types. For example, shoes, clothes, cosmetics, and electronics are different types of categories. In addition, things like ‘computers’ and ‘mobile’ can be child categories under the parent category of Electronics.
Categories help a user to find their desired products quickly.
Product Tags
Product tags help users to find their desired products by searching in the search box. For example, for a mobile gadget, you can add the tags ‘Mobile’ and ‘Phone’.
When a user searches by typing ‘Mobile’ in the search box, all the products that are tagged with ‘mobile’ will appear. That is how it works.
Product Image
It is called ‘Featured Image’. It is the product’s main picture by which buyers can get the best idea about a product. A product’s featured image will appear both on your shop page and single product page.
On a single product page, there might be several images for a single product. Among all images, the featured image will be displayed at a larger size.
On the other side, on a shop page, the featured image will be shown for a product, as only a single product image can be shown there.
Product Gallery
In the product gallery, you need to upload several images from different angles, so that buyers can get a complete idea about a product by seeing these pictures.
2. Add Product Data
As we have said earlier, the ‘Product Data’ section is also called the inventory management system. We have to learn how to use this section properly. It is the most important part of uploading a product.

WooCommerce will allow you to upload four types of products: simple, grouped, external/affiliate, and variable products. You can choose these from the dropdown menu at the top.
On the left side, you will find more options to manage your product data: general, inventory, shipping, linked products, attributes, advanced, etc.
Simple Product: This option lets you upload physical products. It is generally used to upload a single product, like a book, a tool, etc.
Grouped Product: Grouped products are a bundle of a few products. For example, it can be a computer pc or it can be a few disks of the best Hollywood movies of 2020.
External/Affiliate Product: These are the products that you don’t own but want to sell in your store. Here you will display third parties’ products with external links to their store.
Variable product: T-shirts are a good example of variable products. For example, the same t-shirt can be different in color and size. Here price may vary for each variation of the same t-shirt. For that reason, this option allows you to manage this kind of product.
Besides the dropdown menu, you’ll find two more extra options to select virtual and downloadable products.
Virtual: If you want to sell virtual products, then you need to check this option. After checking this, ‘shipping’ as well as some other options will be hidden for virtual products, as these options are not needed for this type of product.
Downloadable: This option allows you to create downloadable products like software, courses, ebooks, and more. When you check this option, you’ll find options to upload your file and configure download conditions.
Now we will discuss the options which are available on the left side.
General: Using the general options, you can set the regular price as well as a sale price, if needed. You can schedule a price for a certain period of time as well.

When you move to an affiliate product, you’ll find options to paste your affiliate product link and edit the button text.

For downloadable products, the general tab will increase the options to allow you to upload files, add download limits, and download expiration limits.

Inventory: You should manage inventory for all kinds of products. When you check the ‘enable’ box, the options appear to manage stock. Checking this box will allow you to add stock quantity, set the low stock threshold, etc.

Shipping: Add a product’s weight(kg) and dimensions(length, width, height) using the shipping options.

Linked Products: In the linked products, you’ll find two more options: Upsells and cross-sells.
When buyers add a product to the cart, they will see more related products that you can determine by adding from the upsells option.
It is very interesting that a buyer comes to buy only one product but at the last moment they buy more than one product if they like your upsell products. Adding upsells and cross-sells will increase your sales.

When you select ‘Group Product’ from the drop-down, the options under the ‘Linked Products’ tab will be changed.
Search for products from the ‘Grouped products’, which will be added to your product bundle.
That means if you want to add some products to a bundle, you have to upload first all the products one by one from the ‘Sample Product’ tab. Next, you will search for those products from here to add them to your grouped product.

Attributes: You can choose different types of attributes, like color, size, and more of a product.
To add an attribute, click on the ‘Add’ button. Next, select a name for the attribute and add the attribute’s values by separating with this ‘|’ icon.
You can add more than one attribute by clicking on the ‘Add’ button.
After you finish adding attributes, don’t forget to click on the ‘Save’ button.

Advanced: Advanced options allow you to add a purchase note for your customers. Your customers will see this purchase message after completing a successful purchase.
You can also determine from here whether your customers can leave a review or not.

Variations: The ‘Variations’ option will be available only for ‘Variable Product’ types.
Before adding variations, you need to create ‘Attributes’. Follow our attributes section that we discussed earlier to learn how to create attributes.
Remember to check on the ‘Used for variations’ option to add an attribute to variations.

After creating an attribute, click on the ‘Go’ button to add variations. Select values like color and size. Next, add additional information, such as image, price, stock status, weight, dimensions, description, and more.
After that, click on the ‘Save’ button.
To add more variations again click on the ‘Go’ button.

Get more options: By using this tab, you will find more exceptional options for your products.

That’s the complete process for how to upload a product to WooCommerce.
